Sony 6K Camera

State-of-the-Art Technology

Latest Camera has 6K Resolution for Sharpest Detail

Keeping up with technology is an obsession at Bauhaus Media. Hardware and software need frequent upgrading to stay on the cutting edge. The latest addition is a Sony FX9 camera with 6K resolution. It’s the kind of thing that makes our creative director, Eric Hanken, smile.

With features like two shooting modes: Full Frame and Super 35; Dual ISO modes: 800 and 4000; and four audio channels, this is the stuff of a videographer’s dreams. For the client it means the highest resolution possible, clear and crisp detail in low-light situations, instant focus on moving objects, and color imagery that was never before possible.

Some of it gets pretty technical, but it boils down to great video.

“It creates a more natural experience for the viewer, a more pleasing picture,” Eric said. “The high resolution and expansive color range gives us almost unlimited possibilities in edit.”

That one area, color range, is a phenomenal upgrade. Saying it goes from 12 bit to 16 bit may not seem that impressive, but to say it went from 4,096 to 65,000 shades of colors gives a better idea. In grading, colorists can find color and detail beyond the normal viewing abilities of the camera operator to create a final image that exactly portrays the mood of the scene.

“This is as close to capturing what the human eye can see that technology has come,” Eric said. “It gives us beautiful color imagery, natural skin tones and a nice soft rolloff in the highlights.”

Another example is in contrast. Most cameras are thrown off by bright light in the same shot with something in shadow, such as a dark figure beside a window. The Sony FX9 adjusts to both in the same shot with its dual ISO modes. At 4000 ISO, it gets the most out of low-light imaging.

The camera’s phased detection autofocus system covers 96% vertically and 94% horizontally. While the fast focus is great for sports, it can also be set to slow focus to simulate a cinematic effect.

The back-illuminated image sensor yields improved sensitivity and noise reduction. Compared to a 4K Super 35mm sensor, the FX9’s 6K sensor has over twice the surface area while providing a wider angle of view and shallower depth of field.

More could be said, but it just gets even more technical. In laymen’s terms, it’s amazing. The Sony FX9 makes things possible that were not possible before, and it makes Eric grin from ear to ear. Think of the ways this kind of technology could make your video projects stand out from the crowd and brand your organization as state-of-the art in quality.
